Council workers underpaid

Issue No. 2341

A Unison union survey of 14,000 council workers showed most are being affected by job losses, increased workload and stress.

Some 60 percent of members did not feel they were paid fairly for their work.

There have been three years of 0 percent pay awards.

Most, 61 percent, felt it was “very important” for Unison to secure “more pay”.

A quarter of respondents also revealed their basic pay levels had dropped. Some 37 percent said car allowances had been reduced and 29 percent said overtime had been cut.

The union should use this opportunity to take up general secretary Dave Prentis’s promise from last year’s conference and “smash the pay freeze”.
