City of London cleaners
The T&G union, together with the London Citizens community organisation, this week launched the latest stage in the campaign against low pay and poor treatment of cleaners in the City of London.
They are planning a series of actions to target the City firms refusing to work towards better pay for cleaners.
On Monday of this week the cleaners took their first action by protesting outside the offices of KPMG. T&G general secretary Tony Woodley said, “Some of the people working in these buildings will get more as a Christmas bonus than some cleaners will make in their working lives.
“We want justice for people who keep these buildings running. Just a tiny slice of the City’s profits could make a vast difference to cleaners. Look at the business news and you can see that the City is cleaning up – now it is time to clean up the City.”
There are around 3,000 cleaners in the City, most of who receive no sick pay or pension.
