Kebba Jobe inquest begins
AN INQUEST began on Monday of this week into the death of Kebba Jobe, who died in police custody in May of last year. Kebba lost consciousness while under restraint and was later found to have had a blockage in his throat.
“This is an important inquiry which will hopefully examine the key issues of policing in London, the most important being the use of restraint and the provision of first aid given by police officers,” said Gilly Mundy, a senior case worker at campaign group Inquest.
This is the second time this family has had to go through an inquest of this kind. In 1996 Kebba’s cousin Ibrahima Sey died after being arrested and sprayed with CS gas.
The inquest jury ruled that Ibrahima had been unlawfully killed. Yet not a single police officer has been prosecuted. Even if the jury at this inquiry also returns a verdict of unlawful killing, it is highly unlikely that the police officers involved will face prosecution.
Eight West Midlands police officers will be prosecuted over the death in custody of Michael Powell in September 2003. The Crown Prosecution Service has decided to charge them with misconduct in public office.
