The Remploy factory in Springburn, Glasgow, slammed its doors on its workers on Thursday of last week.

George Scollan was one of those workers.

George had been sent home last Monday when he complained of feeling ill. He didn’t appear for work on Tuesday or Wednesday.

On Thursday his friends went to his flat and found George dead.

George was 58 and had worked for Remploy for 40 years.

His disability was quite severe. It took him about 10 minutes to walk to the factory from the bus stop a hundred or so metres from the plant. Yet he was always first there to let us in when we delivered Socialist Worker.

He was the first to invite us into the plant, made us coffee and talked incessantly about his beloved Glasgow Rangers.

The factory was like a home and the workers like a family.

The atmosphere inside Remploy Springburn was always full of anger.

All the workers could be found on the picket line when action was called, jovial and up for a fight for their jobs.

The inquest into George’s death will take place this week.

Whatever the outcome, there’s no doubt that George was a victim of the Tories’ austerity.
