Good riddance, Huhne

The odious Liberal Democrat Chris Huhne looks set to go prison for fiddling his speeding penalty points.

Huhne, as is traditional for a disgraced politician, apologised for events that had “happened” rather than things that he did.

He texted his son saying, “I have no intention of sending Mum to Holloway Prison for three months.” Yet that was precisely what he seemed determined to do until this week.

Rather strangely, much of the press presented this as some sort of tragedy.

It wasn’t. It was simply an arrogant, lying politician getting caught out.

Huhne resigned from the cabinet in order to spend time proving his innocence. Now he says he is guilty.

The millionaire boasted he has “two homes we actually use” plus five more he rented out.

Yet he also once claimed expenses of 59p for a packet of Hobnob biscuits—and £85.35 for the “mounting, framing and inscription of photo of Chris Huhne”.

Huhne’s only contribution to politics before his career became a car crash was to promote the building of more nuclear power plants.

His disgrace has one more positive element.

The by-election to replace him will bring the animosity between Lib Dems and the Tories to the fore as they fight for his seat.
