We’ve had enough, say cake factory workers

Dozens of low-paid factory workers rallied outside the Greencore bakery in Hull on Wednesday of last week, on strike against attacks on their pay.

The company has snatched £1.2 million from workers’ wages.

Last year it paid £1.3 million to boss Patrick Coveney.

Some lost up to £2,000 a year through the attacks on shift, overtime and holiday payments.

When an industrial tribunal ordered bosses to reverse this, they just issued new contacts.

So 500 workers in the Unite union voted to strike.

“Enough’s enough,” shop steward Janet told Socialist Worker on the picket line.

“We’re fed up of being bullied and persecuted—we’ve got to do something about it now.”

Unite convenor Pete Ford said the strike “went really well”.

Next time the workers plan to go out for two days.

The site is Britain’s biggest supplier of Christmas cakes, and supplies most of the major supermarkets.
