Cold comfort of fuel poverty

Around 10,000 households are struggling with fuel poverty in Wakefield— meaning they spend 10 percent or more of their income on fuel.

Cold houses make winter deaths more likely as cold makes heart and lung problems worse.

People in cold housing are more likely to suffer from mental health problems.

Children living in cold homes are more than twice as likely to suffer from respiratory problems as children living in warm homes.

At least 30 percent of households privately renting and 18 percent of all homes are fuel poor.

But 64 percent of fuel poor people are not claiming council tax benefit.
