The Ucatt construction union has banned Mick Dooley from standing in the union’s general secretary election.

Mick is a prominent construction campaigner who was blacklisted for his union militancy. He was running on an anti-corruption ticket and had secured 29 branch nominations in order to stand.

Three members of Ucatt’s general council and three members of its executive council, including president John Thompson, formed a selection panel.

It declared that Mick was “not competent”.

Former general secretary Alan Ritchie has also been prevented from running.

The Certification Officer ruled the last election “void” because under 50 percent of Ucatt’s claimed 130,000 members received ballot papers.

Mick told Socialist Worker, “They are determined that I don’t stand. They tried all sorts of things last time, so you have to wonder what they are afraid of.”

He is planning to seek a high court injunction because there is no right of appeal against the selection committee’s decision.
