Richard Barnbrook, the fascist BNP’s only member on the London Assembly, has resigned the party’s whip to sit as an independent.
Nobody should be complacent about the BNP, but this is a sign of deepening turmoil inside the party.
The BNP failed to make any breakthrough in May’s elections. It had hoped to win an MP in Barking and take control of the council. Nationally it also lost almost all its sitting councillors who were up for re-election.
These defeats have plunged the BNP into internal disarray and bloodletting. Two BNP councillors in Hertfordshire have left the party.
