The sounds of drum & bass are such a familiar part of the musical landscape these days that it’s easy to forget its roots in the heady brew of reggae and techno that characterised the early 1990s rave scene in London.

The Ragga Twins – Deman Rockers and Flinty Badman – were one of the most influential acts to emerge from this scene.

Alongside producers Shut Up & Dance, the two Hackney-based MCs pioneered the style of dance music that eventually mutated into jungle and drum & bass.

Now Soul Jazz Records has collected many of these early Ragga Twins classics into this compilation album. It also includes tracks from the two MCs’ earlier incarnation with the Unity Soundsystem, including the excellent “Iron Lady”.

The album captures that extraordinary moment when black and white subcultures collided to produce an utterly original sound that transformed popular culture in Britain and beyond.
